BizBooks.net is pleased to showcase a few of the local creators for this round of the 2018 Storyhive Digital Shorts Edition.

In this interview, we talked to Jonathan Holeton about The Real Ghosts of Pac-man.

________________________________

Can you start by telling us about you and your film?

Our short film is called The Real Ghosts of Pac-man, where it’s 38 years later and Pac-man is now a married man with a child. His wife and child are celebrating Pac’s 38 years of Pellet sobriety. But something disturbs that and all hell breaks loose.

I’m Jonathan Holeton, a Filmmaker/artist with dual diagnosis, which is where you have a mental illness (bipolar in my case) and recovering from addiction. I’ve dealt with my mental illness and addiction problem by staying busy always learning and creating productions through YouTube, it’s called Creativity Therapy. If anyone reading this struggles too, try it out it might help. I’ve made lots of friends through YouTube and they’ve been great support as well as my family. Actually, I met Craig Sephton through YouTube and our mutual friend Nathania Bernabe. Craig and I decided to collaborate on a video together and I came up with a live action Pac-man video where he’s a recovered Pellet addict. Craig came up with the awesome script and we were lucky to get it accepted on Telus Storyhive to hopefully get it funded.

Like in the Pac-man story, I’ve been able to stay sober because my family and friends have been very supportive. With this short film, I want to show that you can recover if you have good support, if you don’t have that support and your family is just as unhealthy you need to get away from them. I was taught by my Group therapists to stay away from slippery people, places and things… stay away from your triggers that influence you to be unhealthy.

Who else is involved in this project?

Craig Septhon is the writer, also my friend Eric Spoeth agreed to be the D.O.P, Andrea Clark is the Production Designer, Danielle Krevenky will be playing Mrs. Pac-man, as well as her Daughter as their Pac child and Cory Christianson will be playing Pac-man. We’re still adding a few more team members such as P.As, but also in need of finding a Producer from Japan, please contact me if you are from Japan or know someone from Japan and want to Co-Produce. I emailed Bandai Namco and they released the IP for all their ’80s games such as Pac-man, where we are allowed to use their IP in our productions, but we need to have a Co-Producer from Japan as well.

What would making this film mean to you?

Making this short film would be the highest budget I’ve worked with so far, it would improve me as a Director/Producer by getting to work with an amazing group of talented artists. A Pac-man Live action film might seem just fun and silly, but it’s about the topic of addiction I’ve been through and going through. This short is a precursor to my first Feature film, PotHoles which is about my time with my best friend Gina who recently passed away, it’s a buddy buddy film a la Cheech and Chong, but shows that with support and staying busy learning your passions, you can recover from your addictions and that those crazy wild times you had doing unhealthy things can turn into stories, others… can learn from, hopefully.

BizBooks.net is pleased to showcase a few of the local creators for this round of the 2018 Storyhive Digital Shorts Edition.

In this interview, we talked to Rami Kahlon about Odd Girl.

________________________________

Can you start by telling us about you and your film?

I’m a professional actress and published writer from Surrey, BC, that also holds a BA in Psychology and History from UBC. As a filmmaker, I got my start through the Summer Visions Film Institution in association with The Cinémathèque. As an actor, I have had lead and guest star roles for Walt Disney Pictures, MTV, and The CW. And, as a writer, my recent script Odd Girl placed as a semi-finalist in the internationally held “Eat Crow Horror Scriptwriting Competition.”

Odd Girl is a thriller drama focusing on social exclusion in high school. It follows the journey of Dylan Lin, a popular student, who finds his perfect existence suddenly compromised by the unwelcome attentions of the lonely outcast, Belinda. But, Dylan quickly realizes that the repercussions of excluding others take on a whole new meaning when the one left out is not who, or what, they seem to be.

Who else is involved in this project?

The key members of our project include several outstanding individuals. Corey Woods and Ashley Chodat are the production designers. They have a plethora of experience working in independent film and theatre, both nationally and internationally, and are taking the skills they have acquired locally and abroad into this project. Pooja Patel has signed on as the costume designer. As the head costumer for Rendering Glint Films, she has worked on web-series’, short films, and in fashion shows, and has a keen eye for aesthetics. Eleanor Jane will be one of our key cast members, playing the stoic mother of the “odd girl.” Our film also focuses on parental control, and Eleanor is an exemplary actress that can bring out the nuances of a toxic mother-daughter relationship.

Furthermore, Farhad Ghaderi will be our cinematographer. Farhad, who recently received a nomination for a Canadian Society of Cinematographers Award, is the perfect choice to capture the moody and suspenseful tone of Odd Girl.

What would making this film mean to you?

This film would allow me to put forward concepts of social exclusion in a creative manner, as well as promoting ethnic diversity and contributing to local content. We are highlighting not only the aftereffects of willfully ignoring others but also the consequences of wanting to be accepted, and the lengths that some will go to get that social acceptance. I believe the extremes of social exclusion are focused on in general media, but never the subtleties in between that. Also, we are showcasing the incredible city of Surrey, where I grew up. What many people don’t know is that the city has a devoted arts culture, and we want to contribute to that appreciation for the arts. We also want to show that Surrey is full of complicated and relatable people who have a story to tell. In addition, most of our cast and half of our crew consist of ethnically diverse individuals. Our lead character, Dylan Lin, is an LGBTQ Asian-Canadian. I look forward to adding to the normalization of the appearance of diverse individuals in stories on screen and behind the scenes.

________________________________

What film-related books or authors have been influential in your career so far?

In school, I was introduced to Save the Cat by Blake Snyder for screenwriting. I had been writing since I was a teen, having been published for my short stories and poetry, but it wasn’t until I got the opportunity to write a screenplay for class that I developed a solid understanding of how to write for the screen.

When it comes to Odd Girl specifically, our production designer, Ashley Chodat introduced me to relatable work. Shirley Jackson, a gothic writer who is best-known for The Lottery and The Haunting of Hill House for example. Her work actually inspired Stephen King to write, while he was working as a high school janitor. Carrie was also a large influence, both the book and Brian de Palma’s film, as well as Sofia Coppola’s directorial debut of The Virgin Suicides. The unique tone of the film, mixed with issues about loneliness and parental control, and the hazy, dreamlike atmosphere, was all very captivating.

Where can we find out more about your film?

As of right now, our official Facebook page is the place to get regular updates on the project. There you can find in-depth bios on the amazing team behind Odd Girl, information on production, as well as funny behind-the-scenes shenanigans. We’ve also recently been featured on Filmlocal.com and Surrey604, online publications, so please do check out those articles as well to get acquainted with the project. In addition, the official film pitch and project details should be available on Telus Storyhive website once voting for funding opens on April 3rd. Feel free to ask my team or I through the Facebook page any questions about the film and we are more than happy to get back to you!

BizBooks.net is pleased to showcase a few of the local creators for this round of the 2018 Storyhive Digital Shorts Edition.

In this interview, we talked to Aimie Willemse about Dream Merchants.

________________________________

Can you start by telling us about you and your film?

I’m a female filmmaker who has been writing and directing for over 5 years now. I love working with all genres, but fantasy stories have always ignited my imagination because I can take the ordinary and transform it through surreal and fantastical lens.

Dream Merchants came to me in a single image: a young girl and a dark, shadowy monster surrounded by a sea of fallen stars. This fairy tale coming-of-age story focuses on Selena, a young, sheltered girl who is whisked far away from the world she knows as she goes on a journey with her father into the unknown. But in this magical world filled with wonders, there is something else lurking in the darkness: the very shadows are alive. Selena is suddenly forced to learn what she’s capable or become the monster’s prey as they try escape it’s nightmarish grasp.

Who else is involved in this project?

I’m particularly fortunate to be working with strong, experienced locals on this project as we pitch to storyhive. Vancouver is filled with such talented people that I’m proud that they love the Dream Merchants story as much as I do.

My producers are Manpreet Babra and Lawrence Davidson who have both produced a variety of stellar shorts (a couple of which are premiering at Cannes Film Festival). Their knowledge of the local film making scene here has been invaluable to the project.

Meanwhile my dynamic DoP duo, Andy Brown and Marco Bossaw, not only work as a part of camera crews on top tier productions but also founded their own production company Transmute Pictures and are constantly working on local short films. Their own short Bucketheads: A Star Wars Story is brilliant and hopefully coming out soon for everyone to see.

I’m excited to see who else will join the team if we get funded by Storyhive.

What would making this film mean to you?

I wrote the first draft of Dream Merchants 5 years ago and have been striving to make this script a reality ever since. My passion for filmmaking has always meant I’ve contributed my own money into the shorts I’ve written and directed, so the chance to get funding would be astronomical and elevate this script to an even higher standard of visual storytelling. I love the fantasy genre and truly believe that this fairy tale will be visually breathtaking short and resonate with our audience as they are transported on this journey.

What film-related books or authors have been influential in your career so far?

I’ve had a rather unconventional career as self taught filmmaker. I’ve always been a much more practical and hands on director, learning from making mistakes and my experiences on other people’s sets. Instead I’ve drawn much inspiration from the works of Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro because for me they are masters of visual world building and fantasy. I’ve read and watch everything I could about their filmmaking processes and it’s really influenced my own career.

BizBooks.net is pleased to showcase a few of the local creators for this round of the 2018 Storyhive Digital Shorts Edition.

In this interview, we talked to Michael Sangalang about Killing for Spark.

________________________________

Can you start by telling us about you and your film?

I’m a 25 year old filmmaker from Vancouver (Port Coquitlam, actually). I studied at BCIT and took the Television Broadcast program, graduating in 2012. Killing for Spark is a black comedy short film about a young couple who find themselves in a rut. Work. Groceries. Laundry. Rinse. Repeat. One day, while fighting during a car ride home, they strike a pedestrian. In an attempt to hide the body and their crime, they find they have re-ignited their passion through bloody murder and can’t stop. Or won’t.

Who else is involved in this project?

We have a great team so far. We’ve got editor Darren Tucker (Dirk Gently), director of photography Brandon Lee (My Imaginary Ex Girlfriend), producer Lisa D’Alessandro (Bordered) and art director Athena Han (Story Unbridled).

What would making this film mean to you?

As a filmmaker, I’ve always done scripted work without much financial aid outside of “hey man, do you still have access to that Arri Skypanel?” and a grant like the Digital Short program would help me carry through my creative vision with the help and influence of Storyhive. Having known many friends who have had the opportunity to create with Storyhive, I’ve been enamored by the process and everything about the Storyhive program. In my journey as a storyteller, it would be my pleasure to create with the aid of Storyhive and continue the tradition of powerful storytelling through the program.

BizBooks.net is pleased to showcase a few of the local creators for this round of the 2018 Storyhive Digital Shorts Edition.

In this interview, we talked to Jeremy Leroux about Dominant Chord.

________________________________

Can you start by telling us about you and your film?

I’m Jeremy Leroux, writer and creative lead for Dominant Chord. I’m a local actor and writer with my face on stage and screen professionally for the last 10 years. My previous short film script Vigilance placed in the top 6 and was pitched by Yellowheart Pictures for MPPIA at the Whistler Film Festival in 2016.

Dominant Chord is the story of Adam Charles, a closeted country star on the verge of being outed, forcing him to choose between his career and his long-time partner, Brian. It’s a story that underscores the career sacrifices LGBTQ+ have been forced to make in order to climb the corporate ladder and fit into outdated industry standards.

Who else is involved in this project?

We have a stellar core team that includes Paul Griggs co-producer and our fantastic director Laura Adkin (The Ride Home, The Goodnight Kiss). Jane Avery has been heading up our social media effort with Kirsten Campbell assisting with marketing and copywriting.

What would making this film mean to you?

This film is important to me because 17 years ago, I walked away from a career making country music when I realized I couldn’t be out and in country. Fast-forward and nothing significant has changed. The stigma for any openly gay country artist is strong, but this story is so much bigger than just a gay country singer. This story is relatable to anyone ever been denied opportunity because of who they are.

What film-related books or authors have been influential in your career so far?

For me, the books I’ve been reading have been mostly focused on screenwriting. Michelle Muldoon, a local writer and script editor introduced me to what I feel are the two most important screenwriting books I own. The Screenwriter’s Bible and The Hollywood Standard. As far as other reading, I’m always consuming online articles on Indiewire, and nofilmschool – there’s tons of information available if you look for it.

Where can we find out more about your film?

We’re grateful for the opportunity that Telus Storyhive presents to filmmakers, by giving resources, support and a platform to tell many diverse stories. Representation is a vital step in making sure different voices are heard.

BizBooks.net is pleased to showcase a few of the local creators for this round of the 2018 Storyhive Digital Shorts Edition.

In this interview, we talked to Maria J. Cruz about Tia Maria’s Cafe.

________________________________

Can you start by telling us about you and your film?

I have pursued a career in the performing arts for some time: acting and directing for theatre. (Theatre degree, UBC) Recently, I have been writing a lot of my own work, and this will be another writing project for me and my co-creator. I believe in exploring and promoting diversity and gender equality, and often mine my Portuguese-Canadian background for that. Having been an actor in film and television since the late 90s, in both Vancouver and Toronto, riding those ups and downs, has led me to the here and now – producing, writing and co-starring in collaborative ventures. I will also be taking on producing duties for this film, as I have on another short. I would love to direct some day – but my first love has been, and always will be acting.

Tia Maria’s Cafe tells the inter-generational story of a Portuguese-Canadian family whose matriarchs run a typical Portuguese Cafe: great espresso, European Football on screen 24-7, and all the neighbourhood gossip your Tia Maria (Auntie Maria) can take!

It’s Kim’s Convenience for the Portuguese Community!

Who else is involved in this project?

Fellow writer and actor Sandra Medeiros, who I created Portuguese Buns Productions with. She runs her own theatre company – Naked Goddess Productions – and together we will adapt our play into a short film. We also have seasoned Portuguese stage and film actor Paulo Ribeiro on board, our DOP Laurel K. Brown runs the very successful independent film festival that just celebrated its 5th season – Cinema Spectacular. Our Director, Selena Lohan is an award winning screen writer who has produced and directed her own sketch comedy shorts and a web series. The rest of our team have been around the block quite a few times.

What would making this film mean to you?

Tia Maria’s Cafe will use source material from Portugese Buns Productions’ hit play, Festa!, produced for the 2016 Vancouver International Fringe Festival. With the digital short format, we will be recreating a typical day in the life of this family – love, laughter, and food! This culturally specific story has an already proven appeal via theatre reviews, and now we want to bring it to an even wider audience. We want to give the Portuguese-Canadian community, notoriously under represented in mainstream media a spotlight!

When you grow up, what gets passed on, and what gets passed over?

BizBooks.net is pleased to showcase a few of the local creators for this round of the 2018 Storyhive Digital Shorts Edition.

In this interview, we talked to Robyn Westcott about Jane Gone Wild.

________________________________

Can you start by telling us about you and your film?

Originally from Bowen Island, BC, I decided to start acting when I was 15 years old. I took a scene study class with a fellow-Islander, Matthew Harrison, and fell in love with the craft. Art has always been a part of my life, and empathetic, expressive people have always inspired me. I moved out into the Big City at 19, and ever since have been striving to maintain a colourful, creative life.

Jane Gone Wild dives into the psychological crisis of a modern-day, directionless millennial. She feels bound by expectations to looks a certain way within the confines of society, and is unsure whether her relationship with her long-term boyfriend is contributing to her feeling of being trapped. The short film touches on heartfelt subject matter with comedic notes and a twist of fantasy. If you threw Blue is the Warmest Colour in with Wild and then blended it in with Peter Pan and of course Tarzan, you might get something close to Jane Gone Wild.

Who else is involved in this project?

We’re blessed with a very skilled, small cast and crew.

One of our lead actors, Liam Hall, will be doubling up as our Aerial Director of Photography. Liam has lead an exciting career with appearances on Once Upon a Time, Lucifer and most recently Arrow as Kane Wolfman.

Our Director of Photography and Visual Effects artist is Terry Marriott. A director himself, he has worked on the visual effects teams that brought you Harry Potter, Fast and Furious, Alice: Through the Looking Glass, Inception, Suicide Squad and many more.

More of our team includes Christina Crivici, playing Jane’s best friend, Eunice Kang co-producing and myself (Robyn Westcott) as producer, director, writer and lead actress.

Maya Hunter McMartin Photography

What would making this film mean to you?

It would be a fantastic opportunity to direct my first project. Creatively and societally, I have a lot to say and share, not only as a young woman, but a human being.

Jane Gone Wild is intended to show what some of us go through to fit in to a routine where we’re surrounded by pavement, glass, credit cards, chatter, make up, hair-removal and advertisements. We can get caught in it and life can feel empty. Jane finds a way to get in touch with her true, “wild” self through the chaos.

It would mean a lot to get a chance to direct a project that challenges concepts of success, happiness and what it means to live a full life.

What film-related books or authors have been influential in your career so far?

I’d say the first book that influenced my career was East of Eden by John Steinbeck. I performed a scene from the movie script in one of my early acting classes, and loved the story so much I found the book! The richness of the story and complexity of the characters sparked a love for character and storytelling. Other books that influenced be are Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen, Rebel Without a Crew by Robert Rodriguez and Story by Robert McKee.

In this interview, we talked to Jennifer Laporte about Imperfect Harmony.

________________________________

Can you start by telling us about you and your film?

My name is Jennifer Laporte, and I’m the project lead/writer of Imperfect Harmony. Imperfect Harmony is about a shy teen who discovers one day that she is turning into a musical instrument, which might be her ticket to finally being understood and accepted. It’s a magical realist female coming of age story!

Who else is involved in this project?

My director Tricia Collins and I were top twelve finalist for Crazy8s this past year with this film, and we are so happy to have Synnove Godeseth on as our producer for the Storyhive pitch. We love being a core female team telling this story.

BizBooks.net is pleased to showcase a few of the local creators for this round of the 2018 Storyhive Digital Shorts Edition.

In this interview, we talked to Christina Beamish about Sunday Morning, Coming Down.

________________________________

Can you start by telling us about you and your film?

I’m a first-time, queer, female director. I’ve always been a writer/storyteller but over the last few years I’ve been working on developing my skills and knowledge of the film industry. My goal is to bring new, representative and inclusive LGBTQ+ stories to an under-served audience.

Sunday Morning, Coming Down is a romantic comedy centered around two men reconnecting after an ill-fated high school kiss five years earlier. It’s slice of life, character study that anyone can related to but told in a way that is unique to the queer experience. Our productions aims to provide a showcase for LGBTQ+ stories and the people that bring those stories to life.

Who else is involved in this project?

Our team is filled with multi-talented people that I continue to be in complete awe of. Firstly we have Producer/Actor/Activist, Chevi Rabbitt. Chevi joined the project earlier this year as both a producer and as one of our featured roles.

Secondly, we have Producer/Cinematographer Extraordinaire: Chase Gardiner. Chase has been an extraordinary ally and champion of this project from the first draft of the script.

Thirdly, we have our amazing production designer Andrea Clark. The preliminary plans that Andrea has put together are mind-blowing and I truly can’t wait to see her bring her vision to life.

Last but certainly not least, we have our amazing cast. Jacob Holloway as one of our leads and Mandie Lauren Jichita as one of our featured characters. I genuinely can’t wait to see their interpretations of these characters!

We are currently still building out our crew, our team and our cast. With each new addition, this project grows and comes one step closer to fruition.

What would making this film mean to you?

Sunday Morning, Coming Down has been a true labour of love. Making this film would be the culmination of five years spent creating and advocating for this story.

Making this film would open doors not only for myself but for other members of the LGBTQ+ community that are eager to participate in a completely inclusive and intersectional production. It will allow me to tell this story the way it was meant to be told, with the people this story strives to represent.

Lastly, getting to tell this story would further galvanize my belief that this can be the future of LGBTQ+ filmmaking.

What film-related books or authors have been influential in your career so far?

The first film book I ever picked up was The Portable Film School: Everything You’d Learn in Film School (Without Ever Going to Class) by D.B. Gilles. It was a great introduction for someone coming in with next to know practical knowledge about the process of filmmaking.

The other film-related books that have been significant influences for me primarily focus on DIY and micro-budget productions. Such as Independent Ed by Ed Burns and Rebel Without a Crew by Robert Rodriguez.

BizBooks.net is pleased to showcase a few of the local creators for this round of the 2018 Storyhive Digital Shorts Edition.

In this interview, we talked to Lori Watt about The Mo7el.

________________________________

Can you start by telling us about you and your film?

Happily! Style Dayne and I have been creative partners on a number of projects. We met at a Larry Moss workshop years ago and have been fast friends ever since.

Style originally came up with the idea for The Mo7el about 5 years ago, which we submitted to Crazy 8s and were shortlisted to pitch in person but didn’t make the final cut on that one. We are thrilled that we have another opportunity to get this film made.

The Storyline: When Kyle inherits an old family motel he’s faced with a choice. To keep it or sell it. After a problematic and chaotic start to this new venture he decides to sell. In doing so, residents of the motel start uprising and casing problems for Kyle. Each one brings a new set of problems and challenges to Kyle, and each of those are represented by one of the 7 deadly sins.

Some influences for this psychological thriller are Wes Anderson, The Shining, and Steam Punk Glam – which we are planning to dress our 7 deadly sins characters in.

Who else is involved in this project?

We have the lovely and talented Brittney Wilson as one of our producers. She brings a lot of skill and ability to this role and we’re thrilled to have her on board. We also have a DOP from Toronto attached but will be announcing who that is on April 4th – so your readers will just have to check our Storyhive page for updates. There are a couple of others that will be announced as well over the voting period. Stay tuned!

What would making this film mean to you?

It would be wonderful to get this film made. Style is currently writing the feature based on this short and getting this made would be excellent opportunity for us to get some exposure and buzz around the feature as well.

What film-related books or authors have been influential in your career so far?

Favourite authors are Anne Rice, Stephen King, Andrew Davidson, Julia Cameron, and Paolo Coelho. I really love Making the Magic Happen: The Art and Craft of Film Directing by Peter Marshall. The Producer’s Workbook put out by Women in Film also has many useful tools for independent film producers.
